According to legend, Sage Sharadwan had two children. Sage Sharadwan, upset thinking that his two children would disturb him in worship, leaves them alone in the forest. Then King Shantanu who was Bhishma’s father meets two children in the forest and recognizes them as the children of Sage Sharadwan as the children have a bow and deer skin. Raja takes the children with him and takes good care of them.

When sage Sharadwan comes to know about this, he comes and takes back his children from the king. Due to the kindness shown by King Shantanu to the children, the son was named Kripacharya and the daughter was named Kripi. Kripi married Dronacharya who trained the Pandavas and Kauravas and made Kripi sit on the banks of a pond in Gurgaon, presently known as Gurugram.
